The librarian's not a dps check, it's a position check. How nice of the devs to introduce what is essentially an early dps check against the default team comp in which half the fucking team cant reach the boss with dmg. I'm guessing you either got really unlucky or there was one guy in your party (or a few pairs) that everyone hated.
